With Earth Day (April 22^nd) coming up later this month, let’s think globally and dram locally! Today, we present three distinct single malts that were created beyond the borders of Scotland. Whiskies from Wales, England and Taiwan are certain to make an intriguing addition to your collection! Much like our Society members from around the world, each of these international single malts has a unique story to tell.

We start with Cask No. 128.27 Wasp stings for an exhilarating expression from Wales. 128.27 was a product of the marriage of several ex-bourbon casks at 2 years of age into a 1^st fill Moscatel butt. The sweetness and richness imparted on 6 years in this dessert wine cask is evident – sweet pastries, cakes, jams and chocolates send us down a decadent rabbit hole of flavour. Another stunner from a beautiful distillery known for creativity if not eccentricity!

Also celebrated this month is Saint George’s Day (April 23^rd) in honor of England’s patron saint. This eponymous distillery seems to be the perfect place to source a peated whisky. Distillery 137 has been producing English malt for fifteen years and has quickly created a cult-like following, especially for peated malts, like this one, at a whopping 60ppm! Cask No. 137.15 Wafts of smoke will impress peat lovers with a smoky, meaty show of peat reek you won’t soon forget. Accents of smoked fish and ginger spice creep in but it’s mostly smoke, smoke and much more smoke!

Let’s head far to the east for Cask No. 138.17 All the good things and a brilliant finale to our international adventure. The tropical environment of Taiwan creates whiskies of intensity and integration that any peat lover is bound to fall in love with. This particular dram draws on the meaty richness of mainland peat and the medicinal salinity of island peat. These different worlds of flavour collide for a bold and beautifully smoky sensory experience!
