Notes

At The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, we are on a passionate pursuit of the world’s most unique casks of whisky. Oftentimes the casks that turn out to be the most memorable happen to be the most unexpected. Here are three (3) Hidden Gems selected by Scott Brunow to consider for your home collection and for sharing.

The first gem is a rare single cask offering sourced from a renowned distillery that is known for its craftsmanship and rich heritage. 12-year-old Cask No. 46.147 Hubble bubble in our "Sweet, Fruity & Mellow" profile boasts complex layers on the palate that starts the mouth-watering. The nose of this whisky is fruity and floral, with hints of orange, peach, apricot, and rose petals. On the palate, it is rich with stoned fruits, cream, with notes of creamy vanilla, dried fruits, and a touch of spice. Add a drop of water to let more tropical notes show. Overall, the secondary maturation in a PX cask, adds slight influences that are a delight to savor…sip sparingly.

Next up is a whisky from a distillery that has been quietly producing outstanding whiskies for years. This particular expression showcases the distillery's signature style, with a smooth and velvety texture that envelops the palate in a symphony of flavors The nose of the 15-year-old Cask No. 55.82 The gathering stillness with secondary oloroso maturation offers rich and sweet aromas of dried fruits, citrus, and oak, with hints of sherry and nuts. On the palate, it is full-bodied and dank, with flavors of leathers, raisins, honey, and a touch of spice. The finish is long and warming, with lingering notes of oak, spice and leather. Overall, this whisky is an excellent example of our "Spicy & Dry" flavor profile.

Last but certainly not least, we have a hidden gem from Wales. Cask No. 128.27 Wasp stings is a true hidden treasure, with a bold and robust profile that is sure to leave a lasting impression. This 8-year-old Welsh whisky is one of several casks combined and then matured in a muscatel barrel. The nose offers aromas of fruit baskets, name the fruit…its there! The palate features a rich combination of spicy flavors and sweet notes in pecan pie, maple syrup, honey, and red licorice. Water brings the Christmas spice cake and milk chocolate. This creates a well-balanced and complex drinking experience.

If ordered separately: Cask No. 46.147= $145; Cask No. 55.82= $190; Cask No. 128.27= $155.
