About Fragile Youth: Our 10-year-old US exclusive cask epitomizes malt-forward whisky. A beautiful example of bourbon cask-matured distillate, malt and honey melt into one another in a subtly complex sipper from this rarely-seen distillery.
Tasting Panel Note: It was immediately apparent that this one possessed a distillate-forward profile, with up front aromas of lanolin, soft beeswax, runny honey and freshly laundered fabrics. It was light, fresh and full of raw ingredient qualities, we all agreed. With water we noted light sooty touches, plus crushed cereals, aspirin and dusty pollens on dried flowers. When neat, the palate conjured lots of caramelised oatmeal, buttered toast, distinctive flavours of sweet wort and mashy cereal notes. Once again, this was dominated by the natural ingredients. With reduction it became delicately sweeter with condensed milk, yellow fruits, hints of tarragon and lemon barley water.
Members Note: It's definitely a before-dinner dram—I'd hate to waste it on a palate wrecked by a spicy or rich meal. Overall, it's a good choice if you're looking to expand your distillery horizons, explore an uncommon flavor profile, or need an interesting bottle to round out your order. I'm glad I picked it up and looking forward to sharing it with friends.
