It was a glorious afternoon as we sat around the new oak table in the garden. The air was buoyant with sweet floral narcissus, lavender and lily of the valley. A most delectable spread lay before us: cinnamon apple rings, peppered pineapple pieces and pears poached in Cognac. We got stuck into spiced strawberry jam on warm croissants, custard tarts and crème brulee with an ever-so-slightly overcooked crust. Sipping on our chilled glasses of cream soda we debated if it was time to open the sweet dessert wine. And speaking of desserts, the sherried trifle with Chantilly cream and lemon sherbet looked fantastic.
Drinking tip: To accompany high tea on a sunny afternoon.
