Notes

At The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, we are on a passionate pursuit of the world’s most unique casks of whisky. But of all the whiskies available to members today, which are the real hidden gems? Here are three whiskies you don’t want to miss!

Society Batch 21 is a small batch 9-year-old Speyside Single Malt bottled at 50% abv. This is an excellent release in our Batch Series that was matured in a variety of casks including hogsheads and barriques in both American and French Oak, all with a variety of toast and char levels. The nose is greeted with fruits, cinnamon soaked berries and gorgeous oak.  The palate delivers with a sparkling grape, stewed pears and peaches, and creamed berries.  Water brings out toffee, milk chocolate and warmed honey in a hot toddy. Don’t miss out on this exceptional Batch release with a one of a kind body.

One of the beautiful things about the SMWS is getting to try uncommon whiskies and Cask No. 128.19 Pretty wacky! is no exception. A single malt whisky from Wales, this 11 year old at 59.8% abv would fall into a Tropical Juicy Oak and Vanilla profile if there was one.  Since that profile doesn’t exist, Juicy Oak and Vanilla will do for now. Tropical fruits greet your nose as the smell takes you to a Caribbean Island sipping on a Pina Colada by a fruit bowl.  The taste is bursting with mango, papaya, and Juicy Fruit gum. Water expands all of the tropical notes adding tart candies.  An excellent example of the Juicy Oak and Vanilla profile!

Let’s wrap it up with 22-year-old Cask No. G9.7 Disarmingly delicious aged in a second fill barrel with a whopping 62.6% abv.  This stunner of a grain whisky explodes on the nose with all kinds of fruits including apples, citrus, and a tart salted caramel cream frosting.  The Sweet Fruity Mellow profile is perfect for this bottle as lemon cheesecake served on an oak platter with apples, pears, and tropical fruits explode.  Dilution almost makes this feel like a rum cask finish as coconut, banana and cinnamon marshmallow start to show along with a fruit basket.  You won’t want to pass up this beautiful 22 year old at a great price!

If ordered separately: Society Batch 21 = $110; Cask No. 128.19 = $160; Cask No. G9.7 = $185.
