Notes

As we begin to journey back outside to enjoy the splendor of summer for the upcoming July 4th holiday, it is hard not to think of some perfect summer sippers to pair with the moments of joy being outdoors and with others (at a distance of course) brings! I’ve gone through my collection here at home to pair with the fun times I look forward to sharing next weekend. We go camping every year for July 4th, somewhat of a family tradition, as the beach, and the company, albeit enjoyed from a distance, create long lasting memories that are truly irreplaceable.

This year, I will be taking The Beachcomber with me, to enjoy while sitting beachside under my umbrella! The blend of Highland and Campbeltown spirit embodies the summer sun and the ocean air in such a perfect balance. It truly is a great summertime sipper if you enjoy a little bit of smoky salinity, but wrapped up in that sweet bourbon hug. It also makes for a great poolside sipper, and overall lounging in the sunshine kind of whisky! For our dinner time dram, I’m packing Cask 108.20 ‘Out and about’ to pair with the grilled perfection of what we call camper’s delight, a mix of grilled tri-tip and vegetables. The Speyside sweet peat packed into this dram is a beautiful accompaniment to the salty and savory flavours of our fireside meal. And for the big grand finale of watching the fireworks over the Pacific Ocean, I thought that Cask 46.86 ‘Leather and flamenco floorboards’ would be a delicious dessert companion, while watching the sky illuminate with a bounty of colors. The gooey notes of jam and leather from the Oloroso cask will sing across my palate in between bites of s’mores and that feeling of gratitude and joy. A special treat to end a special day!

Whether you are at home, celebrating in your own backyard, with your feet in the sand, or even on your couch in the spot where the sun shines the most, I hope you celebrate safely and in good socially distanced company, with a special dram in hand.

Happy Fourth of July!
