Notes

In celebration of Festival Season in the Highlands 2024

About Walking Through a Spice Market: This festival exclusive cask spent time in a 1st fill Spanish oak Oloroso sherry cask and the effect is marvelous! Bold distillate and rich sherry influence combine for a remarkably rewarding taste experience redolent with exotic spices and savoury treats. Distillery 78 is one of the most sought-after distilleries by Society members and this malt proves why!

Tasting Panel Note: Heavily stewed teabags in a metal teapot, masala chai, sugared almonds and salted, caramelised pistachio brittle next to carob-coated Brazil nuts made this a fascinating experience. So did the taste - big and chewy, it was truly a gem, with plenty of oaky characters. We would even go as far as saying there were traces of that elusive flavour called rancio. The addition of water almost added to the intensity as we imagined walking through a spice market in the Middle East before we sat on a train in India and someone shouted “chai, chai, chai!” Following five years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, we transferred this whisky into a first fill Spanish oak oloroso hogshead.

Members Note:My immediate actions after the “OMG!” exclamation was to pull out my phone and immediately order 2 more bottles of it (because I did NOT want this to be my last encounter with this particular elixir). This cask was ringing all the right bells – the heady spice aroma after adding water made me immediately think I was in the spice shop at Pike Place Market with cinnamon, vanilla, and some nutmeg tickling my olfactory nerves, and the velvet feel going down my throat as I experienced flavors of caramel, honey and almonds made me feel like I discovered a hidden treasure of pleasure in a bottle.
