A fascinating and unusual nose, unlike any other peated malt whisky. Big notes of smoked custard, German rauchbier, smoked trout, hessian, coal dust and hot zinc. A muscular yet extremely precise profile. Further notes of corn starch and some rather raw farmyard qualities as well. With water there’s smoked leaves, simmering spices and wood ash. The mouth is immense! A foghorn of raw, earthy, unadulterated peat blares out at you. Almost carbolic in character with a massive carpet of smoke. Underneath there are fresh herbs such as thyme and bay leaf, even some lighter floral aspects. But the whole is intense, deep and powerful. Water brings a more fragrant smokiness, touches of leather and a mineral-flecked earthiness. Quite a ride!
