Notes
About Embrace the wood: Society members have had incredible access to single casks of this distillery’s beautiful spirit over the years. Outside our club, however, you simply cannot find it. The name says it all here with a new oak barrel that was heavily toasted and charred offering an unusual amount of heft to this otherwise delicate malt. Oily texture, intense aromas and bold flavors combine for a bear hug of a dram!
Tasting Panel Note: We were surprised to find an extremely rich and almost vaporous nose at first, with huge impressions of wintergreen, medicinal vapour rubs, herbal cough syrups and infusions, and things such as eucalyptus, mango coulis and then richer notes of heather ales. This was powerful and unusual! With water we got orange oils, throat lozenges, travel sweets, juniper wood, aged orange-flavoured triple sec and some umami touches of bouillon and game meats. The neat palate was robustly full of wood spices, chai tea, camphor, extractive notes of black pepper and fir wood resins. Water brought aniseed, more shades of pepper and spiced teas, plus the return of eucalyptus, menthol tobaccos, and camphor and menthol balm. In the end it went almost full circle back to the profile of the neat nose. This was matured in a bourbon hogshead for 13 years before being transferred to a first fill HTMC barrel.
